Helping orphans and vulnerable children break the cycle of poverty
The global AIDS crisis has ravaged sub-Saharan Africa claiming an estimated 26.5 million lives since 1990 (UNAIDS) - roughly 4 times the population of the Bay Area. The result: more orphans than extended families and communities can care for, child-headed households, and children less likely to attend school (UNICEF, 2003).
Among the comprehensive set of interventions proposed by UNICEF are community-based care, including small, family-type group homes as well as access to education.
